Arts For Art supports diversity in music, dance, art and ideas that embrace improvisation as a means to transform both artist and audience.

The Global Freedom Exchange Mural: Sunday, September 20th, 24 women activists from around the world in First Street Green Art Park for a graffiti workshop led by artist and activist Panmela Castro.

The Global Freedom Exchange: A Hilton Worldwide and Vital Voices partnership leveraging leadership to end trafficking, was a two week mentoring program for NGO women leaders working to prevent and respond to child trafficking. The Global Freedom Exchange brought together 24 women leaders for the opportunity to meet with government officials, discuss best practices with NGO leaders, provide donors with knowledge about funding needs and the best mechanisms for support, and learn about collaborative approaches to working with local law enforcement. The goal of this program is to provide participants with specific knowledge, skills and relationships that will benefit their professional development, their respective NGOs, and the communities they serve. The 24 women came together in First Street Green Art Park for a graffiti workshop led by artist and activist Panmela Castro. In 2010, Panmela was honored by Vital Voices during the annual Global Leadership Awards, recognizing the impact of her work in advancing women’s rights. During this workshop, the group discussed the issue of trafficking and and then picked up spray cans to express their dialogue through a graffiti mural.

Drawing from the practice of the Ramona Parra Brigade—an artistic collective linked to the Chilean Communist Party whose street murals achieved prominence during Allende’s Popular Unity government (1970-1973) and later in opposition to the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990)—the posters were wheat pasted in agitprop style throughout the streets of Santiago. For the 40th Anniversary of Chile’s 9/11, participating organizations responded to a core set of questions, which were reflected in each of the poster designs:

What has happened in Chile over the past 40 years? What social processes have developed? How have the country and society changed? What models are there for the kind of society and country people want to live in? How are the legacies of the military coup and the dictatorship manifested today?

The posters are currently on exhibit at Londres 38, and perform as artifacts engaging with past and present political struggles regarding the legacies of the military coup in Chile, along with ongoing movements for human rights, economic justice, and a new Constitution.

The exhibition of the posters at the Hemispheric Institute invites viewers to continue and expand upon these reflections. To explore the roles that site and memory play across geographical contexts, the Hemispheric Institute exhibits the posters in the same manner as they are installed at Londres 38. As part of the exhibition, the Hemispheric Institute will initiate a street performance on September 11, 2015 by inviting local organizations, which include the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), Clemente Soto Vélez Center, and Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc), to display re-printed versions of the posters across New York City streets. Both the exhibition and the performance intend to further complicate the connective histories of what gets remembered where on September 11.

Come Join the East Village Community and First Street Green in a collaborative mural project led by local artist Gabe Schoenberg. Gabe is originally from New Jersey but has made NYC his home for the past seven years. After living in South America, Gabe was inspired to start his own graffiti tour here in NYC. This project is focused on students who get to use spray paint in a safe and legal setting. The project will last about two hours and will finish with a completed mural to beautify the park.

Each selected artist will be assigned a site within a designated sub-section of the panels. These panels will be repainted on a rotating basis, with an average duration of 2 to 3 months. Proposals can involve single sections or multiple section designs.

The artists chosen will execute their designs. Artists will be responsible for the cost of all art materials and clean-up, and the completion of their design.
