We are kicking off our 3rd season at First Street Green with Lower East Side History Month.
May 3, 1-3pm
ChalkLES, a weekend-long participatory project to bring LES history, art, and stories onto the streets of our neighborhood. Breakdown of the weekend’s chalk events are as follows:
• Friday, May 2nd: Help us chalk designated LES sites with trivia and memories of their lived histories. Sites include: Museum of Chinese in America, Grand Street Settlement, Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation, City Lore, Museum of Urban Reclaimed Space, First Street Green, Andrew Glover Youth Program, LES Jewish Conservancy, Metropolitan Playhouse and MANY MORE!
• Saturday, May 3rd: We need volunteers to help staff these public chalking sites and help encourage passersby to participate with their own stories and images of the LES. Everyone is also invited to join scavenger hunt teams, organized by Guerilla Haiku Movement, who will head out and cover the neighborhood with sidewalk-chalked poetry and engage passersby in their own creative storytelling about the LES.
• Sunday, May 4th: Help us bring some color to Pier 42 for Picnic on the Pier! The day will feature performances, games, crafts, and a free salsa lesson with a live band! To celebrate, LES History Month will also announce the inaugural LES Heroes award, recognizing the often unsung contributions of neighborhood residents, activists and leaders.
