An Installation on Beating Fear to the Punch

Friday the 13th of December, 6-9pm
First Park – 33 East 1st Street Manhattan

There are no saber-toothed tigers, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we fear. Our ancestors’ fears protected them, triggering the life-saving reaction of flight or fight. Today this primal instinct remains in us and though it still protects us, fear can also hold us back. Join the TAPIN crew as we resist the urge to ignore or fight fear and instead warm up to it, name it and expose it – Let’s Out Fear together.

On Friday the 13th, in partnership with First Street Green, the TAPIN crew’s first public installation will expose some of the group’s biggest fears in a larger-than-life art installation. You are invited to simply observe or join us by sharing your biggest fear, either on site or through a live Twitter feed @wetapin #outfear. By naming what scares us most and sharing it out loud, we take the first step in facing our fears and tackling them before they get the best of us.

Want to RSVP?
Unable to attend and want to join in?
Check out our Live Twitter feed on December 13th @wetapin #outfear

TAPIN seeks to make the world a more emotionally-connected place. The TAPIN community connects through interactive art installations that explore the broad spectrum of human emotions, one by one. We believe true freedom comes through exposing our most intense emotions and finding new power to remove the barriers around our dreams.

First Street Green in partnership with OSMOS is proud to present Residual Images, a collection of storm battered photographs by Michael Redpath.
The images capture a 9/11 first responder’s records of the destruction in Lower Manhattan, that were transformed a decade later by the murky flood waters of Hurricane Sandy. On the afternoon of September 11th 2001, Michael Redpath, a FDNY firefighter with Ladder 169 in Brighton Beach, was dispatched to the ruins of the World Trade Center. “The first thing that struck me was the silence,” said Redpath. “Everything was covered with this ash. Everything was white. It was almost like a silent black and white movie.” Starting just hours after the collapse of the towers and continuing for several months throughout the recovery effort at Ground Zero, Redpath made hundreds of photographs of the unimaginable destruction and tremendous effort required to return chaos to relative normalcy. For more than a decade, Redpath’s archive of stunning images was stored away in the basement of his home in the Rockaways until October 29th 2012 when Hurricane Sandy flooded, rendering his possessions trash and irreversibly altering his negatives to fossilize the two tragic events.

OSMOS invites the public to view these powerful, cathartic, and never before exhibited artifacts depicting first responders atop twisted steel surrounded by psychedelic splotches, inverted colors and abstract water spots on corroded emulsion. From October 24 to 29, nightly 7 to 9 pm, a slide show curated by Niko Koppel will be projected as public art on an exterior wall at First Park. The event will start and end at OSMOS Address where visitors will have an opportunity to meet the artist and curator.

Mike Redpath (born 1963, Brooklyn), a FDNY firefighter, earned a BFA fine arts degree (Graphic Arts) from New York Institute of Technology. He moved to Breezy Point at age 10 and has resided in Rockaway for 30 years.

Niko Koppel (born 1984, Chicago) received a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. He is the Metropolitan photo editor for the New York Times.

OSMOS functions as an integrated concept for curatorial and editorial activities, featuring emerging, established and overlooked artists and photographers. OSMOS Address is a project space for art gatherings, publications, and exhibitions in the East Village storefront that was a saloon frequented by Emma Goldman and other radicals at 50 East 1st Street in Manhattan.

First Street Green provides cultural programming in First Park at 33 E. 1st Street in Manhattan. Through their efforts First Park has become an open art space that serves the Lower East Side community by engaging with contemporary artists, designers, architects, community groups and cultural institutions through a series of programs that activate this public space.

Residual Images will be on view October 24th through October 29th, nightly from 7 to 9 pm.

For more information, please contact Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, +1 917 859 7104, osmosaddress@gmail.com

A Festival of Fools theatre company, in partnership with the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival, is pleased to announce the premiere of an original, full-length verse play: “A Game Without a Name: Being the Tale Wherein Impostor Acts the Fool” written by artistic director Timothy Bungeroth.

Visit www.afestivaloffools.org for more information.

About the Play
The Fool is trapped inside the Primordial Zenith, unable to escape or understand his plight until a quartet of bumbling Clowns appears. They lead the Fool through five acts of a cosmic, comic ritual, and a mythical masked trickster figure, the Impostor, appears. The Fool can’t escape until he knows why he’s there – but once he does, he’ll have to make a choice – escape or sacrifice.

The play, which is the origin story of Impostor, is written in iambic pentameter and brings new life to an old style of verse. The heroic couplets are accompanied by original choral music, swordfighting bouts, and rubber chickens battles. It’s a swashbuckling, rhyming adventure into a fantastical world of mythology.

Cast & Crew
Timothy Bungeroth, the company’s artistic director, is the playwright and also plays the Fool. Directed by Amanda Thompson, original music by Brian Kirchner, fight choreography by Teddy Lytle. The cast: Lynda DeFuria, Tatyana Kalko, Ally Katselianos, Teddy Lytle, Meg Mark, Claire Nasuti, Amanda Rodhe, Zachary Zimbler. Costume design by Anna Winter, makeup/props by Christopher George Ebel.

About A Festival of Fools
The non-profit company was founded in 2009, following the production of a free show in Prospect Park of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. From there, A Festival of Fools has continued to produce both old and obscure works of verse (including the world premiere of a new translation of Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s Life is a Dream) as well as original plays written by Timothy Bungeroth, the company’s founder and artistic director. The company’s mission is to make verse plays fun and accessible for a modern audience, by creating new works of verse written in present-day vernacular. A healthy dose of sword fighting and buffoonery also helps enliven the medium.

Visit afestivaloffools.org for more information about the company and the show. Visit fringenyc.org for information about the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival.

NEW YORK, NY – First Street Green in partnership with World Policy Institute, Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc), NYC Parks, and New York City artists, will present WPI’s second installation of The 12×12 Project at First Park, 33 E. 1st Street, in Manhattan’s East Village. An opening event, cosponsored by First Street Green and FABnyc, will kick off the Manhattan installation on August 10 from 5-7PM. The installation will be open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays from 12:00pm to 7:00pm August 6 through September 1, 2013.

The 12×12 Project originated from a book by author and WPI Senior Fellow, William Powers. Powers chronicled his season living in a “tiny house” in the 2010 award-winning, national “green living” bestseller: Twelve by Twelve: A One Room Cabin, Off the Grid & Beyond the American Dream. Inspired by the book, artists Betsy Damon, Simon Draper, Erik Ajemian and Christy Rupp formed a creative team to engage the public in dialogue about how smarter consumption might change their lives—and the planet.

The roving 12×12 installation is a simple, modular space that houses panels containing text and questions from the Twelve by Twelve book. These panels vary, allowing the project to grow and evolve. Participants and park visitors to the installation will engage with the question “What’s your 12×12?” in order to spark new thinking around what smart consumption means for each person. Featured artists selected by FABnyc and WPI will also be in residence over the course of four weeks:

August 6 -11, 2013: Presented by WPI, NYC-based artist Ivy Haldeman will use the 12 x 12 as a space to reflect on the aesthetics of darkness as an indirect means of living sustainably. In opposition to a mentality of 24/7 activity, Ivy will make the 12 x 12 into a place for napping and rest.

August 13 – 18, 2013: Presented by FABnyc, Mario Chamorro, Catalina Parra, and Pablo Gnecco of The Happiness Lab will create social experiments through art within the 12×12 space in order to explore and visualize how people use their own happiness to develop sustainable communities.

August 20 – 25, 2013: Presented by WPI, musician Jonathan Koh will compose music in the 12×12 space, using a combination of classical techniques and synthesizers. His work will contemplate how music can help the listener engage with space and reflect on smart consumption in a small space.

August 27 – September 1, 2013: Presented by FABnyc, NYC-based performance artist Shawn Shafner invites visitors to create their own square patch of latch hook rug, 12 rows across and 12 columns up and down. The last day of the project, the squares will be sewn together, creating a vibrant patchwork and an expression of community collaboration.

Social media will facilitate discussions among artists, their audience, and the global community during and after the installations. Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram (@12x12project) will serve as online meeting places.
